More than 100 people from the plastics industry attended the Plastics New Zealand Annual Conference in Tauranga on the 18-19 June. The conference gala dinner celebrated the companies and apprentices from the plastics industry who have made a contribution to building a strong training culture in 2014.

The big winners of the night were Patrick McElhannan from Sistema Plastics (Auckland) who won apprentice of the year, and RX Plastics Ltd (Ashburton) which won training company of the year. Vincent Rangi from Talus Industries New Zealand Ltd (Levin) was also a finalist for apprentice of the year, as well as Marley New Zealand Ltd for training company of the year.

Competenz account manager John McGregor said the conference was a ‘great experience’ for the apprentices.

“Competenz sponsored Patrick and Vincent to attend the conference which gave them the opportunity to make contacts and mingle with industry people from throughout the country,” he said. “Having the opportunity to talk to people from the plastics industry made them realise that working in this industry is not just a job, but an actual career pathway with a bright future.

“Sistema Plastics were so rapt with Patrick being a finalist, that they sent down a few of their managers to attend the conference as well. Both the guys really appreciated being a part of the conference.”

As the sponsor of the gala dinner, we’re proud supporters of the plastics industry and are actively working with the industry to grow and develop training opportunities for apprentices.
