When you’re in the business of supporting the training needs of 37 industries across New Zealand, opportunities to talk directly, frankly and openly with senior members of our industries three or four times a year play an important part. That’s why we’re putting in place Sector Advisory Groups (SAGs).

“Our SAGs give us a regular forum for our industries to tell us about the challenges they’re facing, so we can help them build skills in their sectors to respond to those challenges,” says Competenz Industry Engagement Manager Bill Sole.

“Maybe technology is changing and their qualifications need to reflect that. Or they’re worried that not enough companies are training and want to discuss how we can help encourage more companies to invest in building their skills.”

The SAGs are also an opportunity for Competenz to share information with members of the industry.

“We may have some statistics to hand that show how employment is expected to change in their sector over the next decade,” says Bill. “Or a report that shows what their industry counterparts in Australia or the UK are doing to get the best from their training investment.”

Bill sees the SAGs as a partnership between industry and Competenz.

“We’re aiming to forge strong partnerships, so our industries have the skills they need, now and into the future. It’s about working together to identify what’s needed, then acting together to make it happen.”

SAG industry members are chosen for their expertise across a range of disciplines, and for their strong networks across their industries.

“We approach people who are respected members of their industry,” says Bill. “And we’re looking for a range of views. So SAG members typically cover operational, technical, human resources and training roles. They might be business owners, middle managers or senior managers – and they’re all well connected with others in their industries.”

Competenz SAGs are now in place for these industries: mechanical engineering, wood manufacturing, printing, refrigeration and air conditioning, plastics, cellar operations, furniture, general manufacturing, and competitive systems and practices. Competenz will set up these SAGs in the next six months: food and beverage, baking, maritime, fire protection, retail meat, and journalism.
