The 2015 New Zealand Sign and Display Awards in Rotorua on Anzac Day evening were a chance to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Sign and Display Association and to recognise the success of our signmaking apprentices.

“Looking after the future is one of the most important things we can do as an industry,” said Association president Nick Baty.

“In the past year Competenz have helped us reverse a major decline in training. We now have twice the number of apprentices we had a year ago and the number’s climbing. And Competenz are helping us raise awareness of our industry in schools too.”

Nick paid tribute to the work of Mike Stevens, Competenz Manager Print, Packaging, Sign and Journalism and his team of account managers. “The Competenz team have been very supportive.”

The awards event recognises excellence in the industry.

“Our industry compares very favourably internationally,” said Nick. “We’ve had huge technical change to cope with and some of our older guests [at the awards ceremony] wouldn’t recognise a modern workshop. But they would recognise our creativity and passion for excellence, and that’s why we’re here tonight.”
