The results are in for the Competenz Toolbox Challenge which celebrates New Zealand’s future engineers and furniture makers.

The top prize in the engineering category went to Gore High School student Anton Musalov who made an outdoor fire pit. Whangarei Girls High School student Bernadine Nash took out the furniture section and Best Video Portfolio award with her bedside table.

The Toolbox Challenge is a nationwide engineering and furniture competition run by the Competenz Career Development team and is open to all schools that offer engineering or furniture subjects in Year 11 to 13.

To enter, students had to submit working drawings and progress photos of their project during the development process. And once completed, a 90-second video portfolio showcasing their final product and its features.

“The challenge is designed to build excitement around trade-based subjects and complements the national curriculum. It’s a fun way for students to work towards unit standards while gaining exposure to an industry-based challenge,” says Derek Tunui, National Manager - Career Development.

“These kids are the future of New Zealand trade, and we’re determined to work with them and our industries to create the best support network possible. I would like to congratulate the winners of the challenge, and all students who participated in the competition.”

Finalists were judged against other schools by industry professionals including representatives from Competenz and also a public vote. There were $10,000 worth of prizes to be won for students and schools, including an iPad, a GoPro and tools and equipment.
